The Girls Choir of the Old Town Music House |
|
The Girls Choir of the Old Town Music House was founded in 1993. The singers came from among the girls studying at Collegium Educationis Revaliae, an integrated education and culture centre and at one of its departments, the Old Town Music School at that time. As of today, what was initially a single choir has evolved into a three-level educational structure: two preparation choirs, one concert choir and the ensemble comprising a number of former singers of the Girls Choir. The chief conductor of all the aforementioned choirs is Maarja Soone, who is assisted by concertmasterchoirmaster Andres Lemba and vocal instructor Anu Aimla. The singers of the Girls Choir of the Old Town Music House are 14-18 years old. The choir has given a remarkable number of performances in various concert halls and churches of Estonia as well as in Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Norway, Spain and Belgium. The repertoire of the choir consists of sacred music from different eras and, for the most part, of the music created and arranged by Estonian composers – original pieces as well as re-workings of folk songs (by Veljo Tormis, Cyrillus Kreek). On several occasions the choir has premiered works by contemporary Estonian composers – Mart Siimer, René Eespere, Mirjam Tally, Robert Jürjendal. In 2006 the Girls Choir of the Old Town Music House released their first CD, "Karjase päev" "(A Herdboys day"), on which they sang a selection of Veljo Tormis's and Cyrillus Kreek's arrangements of Estonian folk songs. In addition to being active on the concert scene, the choir has garnered their share of praise and prizes from competitions and festivals: Special Prize of the Jury at the International Choir Competition "Tallinn 2005", and First Prize from the International Choir Competition in Tolosa, Spain (in the category of children's choirs). The same year their conductor Maarja Soone was named "Young Conductor of the Year 2007" by the Estonian Choral Association, the Girls Choir of the Old Town Music House was nominated for the title of "Choir of the Year 2007". In fall 2009 the choir will participate in the choir competition of EBU, (European Broadcasting Union), in the category of youth choirs. In 2010 the anticipated first concert tour to the USA will take place. Maarja Soone was born in 1974. In 1993 she graduated from the Georg Ots Music School in Tallinn (Supervisor Silvia Mellik), and in 1998 from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (Associate Prof. Leili Sarapuu), majoring in choir conducting. Upon graduation, Soone became employed as a music teacher at Collegium Educationis Revaliae and, simultaneously, as conductor of the Girls Choir of the Old Town Music House, Tallinn. At the present time she works as the conductor of 3 choirs and one vocal ensemble at the Old Town Music House: two preparation choirs, a concert choir and the ensemble consisting of the Girls Choir alumni. On top of that, Maarja Soone supervises also the studies of solo- and ensemble singing of her young choralists. Soone's students have performed in various musical productions for children staged at the Estonian National Opera and in the recent production of Benjamin Britten's chamber opera, "The Turn of the Screw", performed at the 2008 Birgitta Festival in Tallinn. The stage production of the Britten opera was nominated for the 2008 Annual Prize of the Estonian Cultural Endowment. Since January 2003, Maarja Soone holds the post of choirmaster with the Estonian National Opera's Boys' Choir. From 2006, she is a conductor-mentor of the Estonian Choral Association. At the 10th Youth Singing Festival in 2007, she was a conductor of the joint children's choirs. She has been on the jury of numerous choir competitions as well as youth and children's song contests in Estonia as well as a member of the music committee of the International Choir Competition "Tallinn 2007"; a director of the children's workshop at the 2007 EC International Singing Week in Tartu. In late 2007 in Borja, Spain, Soone conducted a workshop on the methodology of working with children's choirs. Maarja Soone was nominated for the title of "Young Conductor of the Year 2007" by the Estonian Choral Association. |
