Kathy Saltzman Romey is Director of Choral Activities at the University of Minnesota and Artistic Director of the Minnesota Chorale, the principle chorus of the Minnesota Orchestra. Known for her meticulous training of choirs, she regularly serves as chorus master to the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart, and has prepared programs with the Westminster Symphonic Choir, Netherlands Radio Choir, Berkshire Choral Festival, and Carnegie Hall Festival Chorus. She is also chorus master of the Oregon Bach Festival Choir, and has prepared the ensemble for numerous American and world premiere performances and recording projects, including the Festivalʼs 2001 Grammy Award–winning CD of Pendereckiʼs Credo. Romey earned an Artistic Degree in Choral Conducting from the Frankfurt Musikhochschule in 1984 under Helmuth Rilling. She then served as Director of Choral Activities at Macalester College from 1985-1992. Active as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States, Romey was named 2002 Conductor of the Year by the Minnesota Chapter of ACDA. The University Singers The University Singers is the flagship choral ensemble of the University of Minnesota, presenting six to eight concert each year under the joint leadership of Kathy Saltzman Romey and Matthew Mehaffey. The choir's curriculum focuses on masterworks of the choral/orchestral repertoire, and also includes opportunities for the chorus to divide into smaller ensembles for performances of chamber repertoire and recitals with graduate student conductors. The choir performs with School of Music ensembles in Ted Mann Concert Hall and the greater community, hosts an annual Bach Festival, and regularly collaborates with Minnesota Orchestra, The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and civic organizations throughout the Twin Cities. |
