Waukee High School -- A Cappella Choir

Ryan Beeken

A Cappella is an auditioned ensemble open to all students enrolled grades 10-12 who elicit a mature vocal tone. Students should have successfully participated for at least one year in the choral program and complete a rigorous audition process. This ensemble provides an intensive and highly rewarding musical experience. In depth study of music from each time period of musical history is explored, including multi-cultural selections from around the world. Vocal production, independence, and musical precision are explored in detail with deliberate emphasis on unaccompanied singing.

A Cappella has earned a reputation for excellence. They frequently perform at various festivals and events and have worked with such notables as the King Singers, Cantus and Simon Estes. They also perform an annual Renaissance Feaste, frequently record CD's and tour biennially. The ensemble has earned consecutive division I ratings at the IHSMA Large Group Music Festival for the past 22 years. A Cappella represented the Iowa Choral Director's Association at the 2005 National Convention in Los Angeles and the 2006 Regional ACDA Convention in Omaha and received an invitation to perform at the 2008 ICDA Outstanding Performer Showcase. A Cappella is honored and privileged to sing at the 2010 NCACDA Convention.

Ryan Beeken is in his twelfth year as Vocal Music Director at Waukee High School. He directs the select mixed chorus, "A Cappella," the Bass Clef Chorus and co-directs 10th grade Chorale. Beeken also works with the Show and Jazz Choir Programs directing the Spirit Show Choir and the new created Jazz Choir Tone Def.

Since Mr. Beeken's appointment, the Waukee High School program has earned a reputation for excellence. A Cappella Choir was selected to perform at the 2005 National ACDA Convention and again in 2006 for NCACDA. The ensemble has earned Division I ratings since 1984 at the Iowa High School Music Association's Large Group Music Festival. The Show Choir and Jazz Choir Programs also have achieved a high level of success.

A frequent clinician and festival director, Beeken is an active member of the Iowa Choral Director's Association, maintains a private voice studio and serves as the tenor section leader at First Baptist Church in Johnston, Iowa. Beeken graduated from Drake University with degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance and most recently completed a Master's in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University. Beeken plans to continue his education at Michigan State where he will pursue a DMA in conducting. He resides with his wife and three children and enjoys every opportunity to spend time with his family.
